Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), also known as urea, is used in modern diesel engines to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The DEF system has its own filter, which may need periodic replacement to ensure the system functions correctly.

How to handle DEF filter replacement on Volvo:

1.Ensure Security:

Make sure the engine is turned off and the truck is on level ground.

Wear protective gloves and safety glasses, as urea can be corrosive.

2.Locate the DEF Filter:

Depending on the truck model, the DEF filter is usually located near the DEF tank or in the DEF dosing unit. It is beneficial to refer to the truck’s manual for the exact location.

3.Drain the DEF Fluid:

Place a catch pan under the filter location.

Carefully open the drain plug or valve to allow the DEF to drain from the filter housing.

4.Remove the Old DEF Filter from the truck:

Once the fluid is drained, unscrew or unclip the filter housing or cover.

Carefully remove the old filter from the housing.

5.Install the New Filter on the truck:

Before installing the new filter, inspect the housing for any debris or contaminants. Clean if necessary.

Place the new filter in the housing. Ensure it sits correctly and matches the orientation of the old filter.

Reattach the housing or cover, making sure all seals and gaskets are in place to prevent leaks.

6.Refill the DEF System:

If you drained a significant amount of DEF, you might need to top up the system. Use only the recommended DEF fluid for your truck.

Close the drain plug or valve.

7.Reset Any Warning or Maintenance Lights:

Some trucks have a maintenance light or warning indicator for the DEF system. After replacing the filter, you might need to reset this light. Consult the truck’s manual for the reset procedure.

8.Dispose of the Old Filter and Drained Fluid:

Handle the old filter and any drained DEF with care. DEF is corrosive and can be harmful to the environment.

Dispose of the filter and fluid following local regulations or take them to a proper disposal facility.

9.Test the System:

Start the engine and check for any warning lights or messages related to the DEF system.

Look for any leaks around the filter housing.

If you’re unsure about any step or are not comfortable doing the replacement yourself, it’s recommended to consult a professional mechanic.
